NEELY HENRY MARCH 2002

NEELY HENRY LAKE
By Reed Montgomery
Impounded 1966
Lake Level: Down 2 feet
Water Temperature: 60 degrees

Spring on Neely Henry, or so it seems. This weeks mid 70's has created an early spring atmosphere, but will the bass cooperate? Weather plays a huge roll here. In the past, late March warming trends have sent bass to the shallows, only to be interrupted by the next cold front.

This week will show bass moving up to prespawn locations. Crankbaits, rattletraps, jerkbaits and fishing with slower bottom bumping worms, lizards and crayfish imitations, will target these bass holding along points, creek mouths and along main lake flats.

Topwaters and spinnerbaits will attract the anxious feeders in the shallows from 1- 3 feet deep, as the water warms to near 70 degrees. If an approching front sends bass back to the deep slowing your lure presentation, will be needed.

When April arrives, the lake will return to full pool and water temps will reach 72 degrees, perfect for spawning bass. Look for the majority of the early spawners to arrive and bed on or near the next full moon.
